Peugeot Boxer Review

Peugeot Boxer 333 L2H1 Panel Van (MWB)

Manufacturer’s RRP: £18,550 (excluding VAT)

One of the best equipped panel vans in its price band, good quality and robust with a well appointed cabin.

Technical

Available in one of the three HDi common rail diesel engines, 2.2 (100bhp), 2.2 (120bhp) and a powerful 3.0 (157bhp) - all designed to be economical and are well matched to the size of the van. The gear stick is mounted on the dashboard and connected to a 6 speed manual gearbox. The gear shift is relatively smooth but undistinguished against floor-mounted gear boxes found in other panel vans.

Drive

Benefiting from additional sound proofing around the vehicle, the boxer provides a smooth and comfortable ride. With various insulating features reducing the vibration and absorbing the noise, day to day use of the boxer becomes more attractive. The huge wing mirrors and more than ample lighting all contribute to easier manoeuvres and increase visibility in poor conditions. A small niggle is the handbrake which can easily be left slightly up.

Cabin comfort

This is an area where the Peugeot Boxer really excels with a multi-adjustable driver's seat and steering column allowing a very comfortable driving position. There are handy armrests and plenty of room gives the cabin a spacious feel. The storage options are impressive - a dashboard mounted gear stick makes way for an impressive lidded bin that will easily fit a holdall bag. A 1- litre flask will fit in the door pocket and there is ample space on the dashboard to store your lunch. Other features include a folding clipboard -handy for direction but not particularly robust, electric windows, electric and heated door mirrors, central locking and a radio/CD player with steering wheel mounted remote controls.

Load area

Low sills at the side and rear of the van coupled with doors that are easy to manoeuvre and can rotate to 180 degrees (with a 270 degree option), all help to facilitate simple access to the load area. Although slightly more generous in load length, the boxer lacks the generous payload that the Ford Transit range can offer, falling short by almost 400kg. A slip-resistant step plate and lights above the rear and side doors do offer compensation.

Security features

  • Lockable fuel filler cap
  • Unglazed rear doors
  • Visible Vehicle Identification Number (at base of windscreen)
  • Lockable glove box
  • Rolling transporter immobiliser
  • Deadlocking

  • Verdict

Undoubtedly a capable vehicle; superior in appearance with an adequate loading space.
