Renault Vans

The Trafic, the Master, the Kangoo and the Clio are the vans in Renault's roster of commercial vehicles.

The first Renault vehicle was produced in 1898 but it was not until the 1960s and 1970s that the first vans began to roll out of manufacturing plants.

Earlier vans were the Renault 4 Fourgonette, the Renault Estafette and the Renault 50 series which was made until the 1990s.

However it is the later models that have helped establish Renault as one of the biggest names in the commercial vehicle world.

The Renault Trafic van was first introduced in 1980 and has remained a staple production from the manufacturers ever since.

Features include a broad range of body styles offering volumes from 5.0 to 7.1 cubic metres as well as chassis-cab models. Payloads of 1,000kg and 1,200kg also help to give a wide variety of choice for fleet users.

The Euro-IV engine range includes a new 2.0-litre common-rail diesel providing a useful power increase of its 1.9-litre predecessor with 90PS and 115PS. The revised 2.5-litre engine now has 15PS more power at 150PS. A 120PS two-litre petrol engine is also available.

The Renault Trafic's success is shown in its five consecutive victories in the Best Medium Van at Van Fleet World Honours, where it took the accolade again in 2007.

Judges at the competition were comprised of leading industry experts including Fleet World's editorial team, members of the leasing industry, fleet managers and representatives from residual values guides.

Keith Hawes, director of Fleet & Commercial Vehicle Sales with Renault UK, said; "It is testament to the enduring appeal of the Renault Trafic van that it has won this prestigious award for the fifth year in a row and is clearly still the van of choice for fleets."

John Kendall, Van Fleet World editor, said: "The Trafic went through one of the subtlest re-designs of last year. You would have to be something of a 'Vanorak' to pick out the differences. But this is on the, 'If it ain't broke don't fix it, principle'."

Renault has also kept customers interested through introducing new offers with the vehicle. Earlier this year both the Trafic and the Renault Master started to be sold with an improved warranty which offers three years/100,000 mile protection in place of the previous 60,000 miles of cover.

The Renault Master is the biggest of all the vehicles that the manufacturer offers and when it first appeared in 1998, it won the International Van of the Year award. All models come with electric windows, a CD player and an on-board computer as standard.

Additional options available include reverse parking sensors, satellite navigation, cruise control and mobile phone preparation.

One review from Yahoo! Cars said: "From door handles to dashboard, it feels robust enough to stay the course and the diesel engines are similarly dependable."

The Kangoo was introduced in 1997 and has sold over 1.4 million units. Since its launch, the vehicle has undergone a series of subtle facelifts to bring it to where it is today with the newest versions of the van unveiled at the recent Commercial Vehicle show in Birmingham.

Standard features for the Kangoo include ABS with EBD, 2 x 15W single cd player with finger tip remote control, single side loading door and electric front windows.

Renault Fleet boss Keith Hawkes, said that the new Kangoo means the phasing out of the Clio van.

He said: "It's cheaper to go for a bigger van even though the cost new is more. This is because small vans have poor RVs. The Kangoo Compact gets over that problem. It's based on the Scenic so the safety and comfort is excellent and the load space will take a Euro pallet. We'll sell a ratio of 25 to 75 in favour of the larger Kangoo."

Looking ahead in 2008, the Renault appears to be going from strength to strength. Last year Renault sold around 21,500 LCVs in the UK and was the first manufacturer to launch a website dedicated purely to its fleet of commercial vehicles.

Renault is also breaking ground with its commitment to being environmentally-friendly with its ‘eco end-of-life’ design ensuring up to 95 per cent of each model is reusable.
