© Adfero Ltd The so-called white van man is beginning to be replaced by a more upmarket version, it has been claimed.

According to insurer Swinton, there is a new type of van driver taking to the roads, which have been dubbed "white vin men".

These drivers are self-employed and tend to buy top-of-the-range vans such as the Mercedes Vito and VW Transporter Sportline, the company said.

And instead of carrying out work such as plumbing and building, these van owners instead have jobs related to landscape gardening, interior design and gourmet catering, Swinton explained.

"A new generation of entrepreneurs are shunning nine-to-five jobs and going into business for themselves," a Swinton spokesperson remarked.

"It also appears that TV shows such as Master Chef and House Doctor are giving some of these people the confidence to go it alone in the more creative and artistic sectors."

Meanwhile, a recent survey by Vauxhall Commercial Vehicles suggested that van drivers do not know the correct speed limits for their vehicles, with 85 per cent of those polled wrongly believing that limits are the same for all cars and vans.
