© Adfero Ltd Over six million motorists in the UK switched their car or van insurance policies over the last six months, according to new research.

MoneyExpert.com statistics show that the average amount paid for a deal is around £682, adding that a ten per cent increase is expected as the year progresses.

It added that 14 per cent of drivers shopped around and took out a deal with another cover provider in the last six months.

Sean Gardner, founder of MoneyExpert.com, remarked that "loyalty does not pay" in the car insurance sector.

He added: "With over 35,000 people switching car insurance provider every hour it seems that the nation is catching on to the situation and voting with their feet."

This comes as a recent survey from Motorpoint found that six out of ten people who pick up a vehicle with 2008 number plates will be purchasing a car with lower CO2 emissions.
