20 mph urban speed limit touted © Adfero Ltd Car and van drivers travelling on roads in residential areas may soon find that they are breaking the law by travelling at more than 20 mph, it has been reported.According to Times Online, government officials are looking to cut road deaths by bringing in the new limit. By 2020, it is hoped that the number of people dying in road accidents in urban area is approximately 2,000. Statistics from the Department for Transport show that some 3,150 people were killed on roads in the UK over the course of 2006. Jim Fitzpatrick, the road safety minister, told the news source that he would like to see the UK be "top of the world on road safety". He said: "We could reduce crashes still further, with the help of more 20mph zones, especially in residential neighbourhoods and other areas where there are vulnerable road users."
