Both insurance and security are critical to most van owners. If your van is out of action your business stops, so good insurance cover is essential. Keeping your premium down is best achieved by a bit of shopping around and then taking the following actions:-

Firstly, try and restrict the number of drivers on your policy, ideally to named drivers only and if your business can take it only to drivers over age 25.

Secondly, take out no claims discount protection. Even if this means a short term premium increase it will make it easier to budget knowing that you can have a couple of claims over the three year period without having to fork out extra every month.

Your van insurance won't cover any tools or materials in your van, so make sure they are taken out overnight and ideally store your van in a garage or a locked yard overnight.

GOODS IN TRANSIT INSURANCE

Couriers and hauliers in particular may want to protect their business by taking out goods in transit insurance which covers goods against loss or damage whilst they are in your vehicle, whether they are your property or whether you are acting as a carrier. EMPLOYERS' LIABILITY INSURANCE

By law all employers must ensure against the liability for injury or death to employees sustained by them arising from their employment. This will normally both full time contracted employees and apprentices and also those contracted from another employer. Only close relatives escape this liability. The law requires at least £25 million worth of employers' liability cover but in practice most policies are double that.

PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE

Public liability insurance covers your legal liability for damages should a member of the public claim for death, bodily injury or damage to their property as a result of your business's activities. It should also cover legal fees, costs and expenses should such a case go to court. As with any form of insurance it is important to take proper advice about the amount of cover you need as single award for injury can exceed £1 million. Note however that third party insurance on a motor vehicle does cover your liability to others in regard to the vehicle itself.
