Fiat Vans

The Fiat Group confirmed its place as one of the world's leading car and van manufacturers when it announced a 13 per cent increase in profits for the first quarter of 2007.

Furthermore, its Fiat Commercial Vehicle division is one of Europe's biggest van manufacturers, experiencing growth of 40 per cent in sales over the last four years.

Fiat's Scudo van won the prestigious International Van of the Year 2008 award, after 30,000 orders were placed for the vehicle during the first three quarters of 2007.

The van has also grown in popularity in European markets over the last 12 months and it now accounts for 35 per cent of passenger transport vehicle sales, rather than 23 per cent in 2006.

Fiat manufactured its first light commercial vehicle in 1903 and has experienced continual growth ever since.

Its flagship vehicle is the Fiat Ducato, which essentially is the same van as the Citroen Relay and the Peugeot Boxer, and came into being in 1981.

The van was redesigned in 1993, when it was modified to provide owners with a 12 metre cubed payload and a choice of four engines: 2.0 petrol; 2.0 JTD; 2.3 JTD 16v or the 2.8 JTD.

In 2006 the Ducato was once again revamped and made available in many different variations so that its carrying capacity could be increased.

The Ducato's news website says the latest model boasts an innovative design, powerful engines, easy loading and, most importantly, safety and security.

Another vehicle in the Fiat LCV range is the Grande Punto car-derived van which is described as having a "powerful and economic" latest generation diesel engine, as well as a special luggage compartment to hold all of its owner's tools.

Yahoo! Cars UK describes it as a "stylish supermini" saying "a key strength [of this van] is the way it looks but it is [also] very competitive in terms of load and cabin space and none can beat the economy of its engine".

The Fiat Grande Punto van boasts many luxury features, such as remote central locking, electric wing mirrors, climate control air conditions, ABS and alloy wheels.

Another gem in Fiat's crown is the Doblo Cargo, which was first manufactured in 2001 and in 2006 received the International Van of the Year award.

It is a medium-sized van aimed at those who have a heavier load to shift and its front and rear were redesigned in 2005.

Fiat says of the van: "Fiat Doblo makes your work day more comfortable…Everything is within easy reach thanks to the ergonomic position of the controls and a rich set of storage compartments."

The Doblo Cargo has a 730 kilogram (kg) pay load, which can be increased to 850 kg and an interior volume of 3.8 metres squared. It offers drivers either a 1.4-litre petrol engine or a 1.9 multijet diesel engine.

The remaining van in the Fiat range is the Scudo, which was voted International Van of the Year 2008 at the European Road Transport Show 2007.

It has been designed to meet the needs of the urban and intercity goods transport market and to offer drivers the ease and comfort of a car.

The Scudo was praised by judges of the award for its extra-wide side and rear door that make loading and unloading easier and its new braking system, which employ disc brakes all-round.

Fiat says that the van "loads like a van but drives like a car" and notes that it also has special features, such as sound-proofing, limited vibration, easy-to-use controls and a gear lever on the dash board.

However, its most recent offering its the Fiat Fiorino light van, which was unveiled at the Commericial Vehicle show, earlier this year.

The van either comes with a 1.4-litre 73 bhp petrol or a 1.3-litre 75 bhp MultiJet turbodiesel engine and has been celebrated for its quirky design, which far exceeds many people's expectations for a van.

All-in-all, Fiat has won the heart of van drivers all over Europe providing some of the most stylish and practical solutions. Commenting on its success during 2007, Fiat said: "The Fiat Group played out its strong diversification by region and product.
